The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) have strongly reminded the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant to prevent fires. This call comes in response to a significant rise in fire incidents in the Philippines during the summer season.
According to recently released data by the BFP, recorded fires during the period of April 1-26, 2023 have surged by nearly 40% compared to the same period last year. April 2022 saw only 953 fire incidents, whereas this April witnessed a staggering 1,332 recorded fires nationwide.
The BFP attributes this increase in fire incidents to several factors, including higher electricity demand during the summer, which strains power lines. Additionally, the presence of dry leaves, grass, and garbage, susceptible to ignition by the sun’s heat or carelessly discarded cigarettes, has contributed to the rise in fire outbreaks.
In light of these concerning statistics, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos, Jr. has urged local government units (LGUs) to conduct thorough inspections and collaborate with local BFP offices to ensure compliance with the Fire Code of the Philippines (FCP), as outlined in Republic Act 9514.
In this regard, the 8E Multi-Emergency Early Response App System (8E MEERAS) with its impressive 60-second response time, can play a crucial role in saving lives and properties during fire incidents. By using the 8E MEERAS app, individuals can quickly alert emergency services, providing precise location information for rapid response. This efficient communication and coordination between users and emergency responders can significantly reduce response time preventing casualties and minimizing property damage.
While the adoption of innovative technologies like 8E MEERAS is crucial, Sec. Abalos emphasizes the importance of practicing simple fire safety protocols. Unplugging unused appliances, avoiding leaving stoves unattended, regularly inspecting LPG tanks, and storing flammable items in secure locations are among the effective measures individuals can take to protect their homes.
As the number of fire incidents continues to escalate, it is imperative for everyone to remain vigilant, adhere to fire safety guidelines, and leverage tools like the 8E MEERAS app to speed up emergency response efforts. We can strive towards a safer and more fire-resilient nation by working together and implementing preventive measures.
