Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are vital to our nation’s economy. They are rightfully considered modern heroes, with their remittances contributing to the country’s economy by being the second-largest source of foreign reserves. However, their sacrifice and dedication come with numerous challenges and risks while working abroad, including employer abuse, exploitation, and poor working conditions. To address these concerns and prioritize the safety and well-being of OFWs, 8E Tech Philippines has introduced the groundbreaking 8E Multi-Emergency Early Response App System (8E-MEERAS). This innovative solution boasts a remarkable 60-second response time and a GPS-tracking system for responders to locate people in need of emergency assistance easily.
The recent data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) states that the number of OFWs who worked abroad was estimated at 2.3 million. Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work contracts comprised 97 % of the total OFWs. The rest, which is 3%, worked overseas without a contract. Interestingly, there are more female OFWs than males, with the former composing 53.7 % and the latter composing 46.3%. The largest proportion of OFWs belonged to the age group 30 to 34 years, comprising 21.7 % of all OFWs, followed by those aged 25 to 29 with 20.4 %. Female OFWs were younger compared to male OFWs. A higher percentage of 24.1% of female OFWs were in the age group 25 to 29 years, while the male OFWs were reported to have a higher percentage of 19.8% in the age group 30 to 34 years. There were more male OFWs than females aged 35 years and over.
On record, Saudi Arabia is the leading destination for OFWs. In 2021, the top five destinations of OFWs were the following: Asia (78.3%), Europe (9.3 %), North and South America (8.9%), Australia (2.2%), and Africa (1.3 %). About 24.4 percent worked in Saudi Arabia, followed by the United Arab Emirates at 14.4 percent. Other countries in Asia with a large number of OFWs include Hongkong (6.7%), Kuwait (5.9%), Singapore (5.8%), and Qatar (4.8%).
In this blog, we will explore the significance of the 8E-MEERAS app system and how it can effectively protect and empower our modern heroes in collaboration with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and embassies abroad.
Safeguarding OFW Rights and Welfare:
The DMW is at the forefront of advocating for the rights and welfare of OFWs and their families. By collaborating with 8E Tech Philippines and embassies abroad, the DMW ensures that OFWs can access immediate assistance and support in times of distress. The 8E-MEERAS is a powerful tool in safeguarding the rights and well-being of OFWs, empowering them to seek help and report any abuse or exploitation they may face.
Unparalleled Response Time:
The 8E-MEERAS’ 60-second response time is a game-changer in emergency assistance. In critical situations or when urgent help is required, OFWs can rely on the app to quickly connect them to the nearest appropriate authorities. This swift response ensures that necessary actions can be taken promptly, potentially preventing further harm and providing immediate support to OFWs in distress, with responders even knowing their location because of the GPS tracking-system.
Tailored Support for Diverse Situations:
OFWs face many challenges while working abroad, including abuse, exploitation, and contractual violations. The 8E-MEERAS is designed to cater to the diverse needs of OFWs in various situations. Whether an OFW is experiencing physical or emotional abuse, excessive working hours, or any other form of injustice, the app provides a secure channel to seek assistance from the DMW and embassies. This tailored support empowers OFWs, helping them navigate difficult circumstances and protecting their rights.
Strengthening the Role of Embassies:
Embassies play a crucial role in safeguarding the welfare of OFWs. By collaborating with the 8E-MEERAS, embassies gain an efficient platform to connect with and assist OFWs in their respective jurisdictions. The app system enables seamless communication, facilitating the timely resolution of issues and enhancing the overall support provided by embassies to OFWs in need.
Focus on Saudi Arabia and Other Key Destinations:
Saudi Arabia remains the top destination for OFWs, with almost a quarter of the total OFWs working there. The 8E-MEERAS’ collaboration with the DMW and embassies ensures that OFWs in Saudi Arabia and other key destinations worldwide receive the necessary support and protection. This initiative aims to mitigate risks and provide a safety net for OFWs, creating a more secure working environment.
Overall, the 8E-MEERAS, developed in partnership with the DMW and embassies abroad, represents a significant step forward in ensuring the safety and protection of our modern heroes, the OFWs. By leveraging technology and providing an unprecedented 60-second response time, this innovative solution empowers OFWs to swiftly report emergencies and seek assistance. Together, let us stand by our OFWs and support their invaluable contributions to our nation, ensuring they can work abroad with dignity, security, and peace of mind.
