BFP-Ilocos calls for vigilance vs. fire incidents.
The BFP Ilocos Region (BFP-1) is urging the public to be vigilant against fire incidents as it strengthens awareness bid and increase response rate and assets following the 39% rise of incidents in 2023. BFP-1 assistant regional director Supt. Eddie Jucutan said 732 fire incidents, mostly involving residential houses, were recorded in the region from January to December 2023, higher than the 528 incidents in the previous year. Of the total, 266 were in Pangasinan, which has the biggest land area and population among the provinces in the region, followed by Ilocos Norte, 196; Ilocos Sur, 145; and La Union, 125. Jucutan attributed the increase in fire incidents last year to lack of vigilance among the residents. In January and February this year, the BFP has already recorded 195 incidents in the region.

OCD pushes for enhanced fire response, strict preventive measures.
In time for Fire Prevention Month this March and amid the forest fires in Benguet, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said it would continue to implement and support interventions for the strengthening of the country’s capabilities in responding to different fire incidents. On February 26, OCD officials, the BFP and Armed Forces of the Philippines officers met with the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) to tackle the support of the US government for firefighting operations. Among the major challenges in response operations were the locations of forest fires that the fire trucks could not access and the lack of equipment for responders.

24 hectares of forests damaged in recent Bontoc fire incidents.
Twenty-one forest fires have been recorded in the Mountain Province since January, with the latest incidents damaging at least 24 hectares of forest in the capital town Bontoc. Mayor Jerome Chagsen Tudlong Jr. said most of the fire incidents were due to negligence, burning of grasses residents removed at their surroundings and farms, burning of garbage, and kaingin (slash-and-burn farming). The mayor also attributed the recent fires to the impact of the dry spell that has resulted in pine trees and pine needles drying up and becoming highly flammable.
